Historic and Handcrafted Mexican Olinalá Boxes Are Newest Amenity For Guests at Grand Velas Los CabosResort
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (May 30, 2017) — Guests staying at the new Grand Velas Los Cabos resort can now appreciate the detailed handmade craftsmanship of the Olinalá box, keeping their memories inside to take home at the end of their vacation. These artistries are the result of a long and laborious process (involving up to 29 separate steps) of carving, painting and the application of lacquer (a resin for varnishing derived from certain plants and insects). Located in the region of Sierra Madre del Sur, Olinalá is the main producer of lacquerware, one of the country's oldest crafts, in Mexico. Here, there are artisan workshops that have passed the techniques for lacquer production from generation to generation, dating back 3,000 years. The wood comes from the Linaloe tree which imparts the very particular scent and the boxes are replete with one-of-a-kind themes and motifs ranging from flowers, foliage, landscapes and animals depicted in colorful, unique patterns. At Grand Velas Los Cabos, the Olinalá box is available for guests as a complimentary welcome gift filled with Mexican sweets.
Resort rates start at $750 per person per night and include luxury suite accommodations, a la carte gourmet meals at a variety of specialty restaurants, premium branded beverages, 24-hour in-suite service, fitness center, nightly entertainment and more.
